Joined NSD2 – Find a Niche!

A few days ago I posted that I had started my first affiliate store. Well, I’m going to put that on hold for a bit now that I’ve joined the Niche Site Duel 2.0 challenge (NSD2.0).  It’s an insanely good opportunity to watch and learn as a niche site gets built from the ground up by someone who has experience doing it.  Pat Flynn over at Smart Passive Income is one of those rare people who truly shares his knowledge.  I think that’s actually a good part of the reason he is so successful.

By joining this challenge I will be attempting to build a site that hopefully gets me on my way to earning an online living.  I’ll be following along as Pat Flynn builds his site and shares is successes and failures, and I’ll by applying my new found knowledge to my efforts.

The first step is to come up with a niche market. I’ve gone back to a post from the original niche site duel 1.0 on the smart passive income blog to find a nice way to get started (paraphrasing):

  1. Write down 7 of your passions, 7 problems and 7 fears.
  2. Select your top 10 from that list of 21.
  3. Do keyword research for each of those markets.
  4. If any related keywords stand out, check to see if the domain name matching the keyword 100% is available.

I’m stopping there for now because I haven’t actually gone through the whole process yet. So far I’ve downloaded the free trial of Market Samurai – I’m already blown away by how useful this software is.  I’ve been using Google’s fee Keyword Tool, it has the basis to give you all that information, but you have to do it all manually.  You have to switch back and forth among several online tools, create spreadsheets and come up with some calculations to help filter your findings.
